Checkmate Chess Camp

Chess the Mad Science way is a blast!

Chess the Mad Science way is a blast! Everyday children will learn the chess rules, strategies and tactics. Game pieces have been given extraordinary personalities and are brought to life. Play with our giant chess set - the biggest you've ever seen! Campers will also receive their own magnetic chess set to keep. As an extra bonus, part of each day will be spent doing super-cool science where children will make and take home activities and projects every day such as a Rocket, Stunt Plane, Space Shuttle, Race Car, Silly Putty, Superballs and much more!

Camp-Day Themes (science portion):

Air

This day includes an exciting immersion in the science of air pressure and Bernoulli’s principle, and flies children through flight and aerodynamics basics. We’ll discover the four forces that affect flight and make and test various plane designs to see these forces in action. Children will fold and fly the Delta Dart plane, then add elevators and a rudder to make it turn, spin, and loop. Campers will make and take home their very own Air Blaster foam launchers.

Magic

The science of magic will leave children astounded, amazed, and educated! Discovering how to make objects disappear and reappear using optical illusions, polymers, mirrors, hidden compartments, sleight-of-hand, and misdirection are all part of the learning experience. The Curious Cube activity lets children bring home the magic to mystify their friends and family.

Nature

Children get engrossed in entomology! Insect anatomy is introduced and examined up-close. An ultraviolet powder demonstration lights up the truth on how insects spread pollen. Children learn how insects adapt by building insect puzzles at habitat stations. An Insect-A-Vision kit allows the junior entomologist to get bug-eyed at home! We will also get weather-wise in this climate-controlled class. Children try out tools that meteorologists use to measure weather, and take home the colour-changing UV keychain to detect ultraviolet light from the sun.

Chemistry

Children will get stuck into science during this super sticky stuff adventure! Campers will be introduced to the concepts of physical and chemical reactions. Children learn to identify chemical change clues and conduct a series of hands-on experiments to investigate changes happening before their eyes!  Each child makes their own stick of Sidewalk Chalk and assembles their Professor Beakerdude kit – a set of reusable adhesives and a beaker to continue their explorations at home.

Rocketry

Campers will build their very own model rockets while exploring the science of rocketry.  Using their creative problem-solving skills, they will take on the role of NASA engineers. The class will race balloon rockets and be challenged to design balloon-powered rocket cars.  For our grand finale, the children will witness a thrilling model rocket launch, and learn the meticulous preparations necessary to send up a rocket!
