Great Canadian Astronaut Chris Hadfield Uses Social Media to Inspire a Whole New Generation of Young Science Enthusiasts

Jan 18, 2013 12:00 AM

So far mainstream space travel happens only in science fiction and Hollywood movies. You won’t be booking a seven day, all-inclusive stay at the space station any time soon. Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield might not be able to put you in a space suit, but he will take you with him--if you follow him on Twitter. From a computerized internet connection in his bunk on the International Space Station (ISS), Chris Hadfield has been sending out breathtaking images, taking questions from school kids, and even joking with Captain Kirk. He’s a hit—with over 220,000 Twitter followers. It’s not hard to see why. He is passionate about learning, and he loves to share what he learns.

"The perspective that we are subject to, that we are privileged enough to see directly to our eyes, is one that, I think, would benefit everyone.”-Chris Hadfield, Civilian Astronaut

Social media has changed the way we share information and learn in exciting ways. At Mad Science of Toronto, we make it our mission to inspire awe and a passion for learning in every child who attends one of our events, birthday parties, workshops or camp programs. We hope you will follow Commander Chris Hadfield across the web as he demonstrates how regular objects behave in a weightless environment, what it’s like to cut your nails in space or to view the birds-eye images of earth that are sure to inspire a whole new generation of young science enthusiasts.
